Show the Force Exerted on a Charged Particles Moving in a Magnetic Field

Here's a convenient item with a special circular solution trough that makes it possible to study the direction of flow, giving a visual demonstration of Lorentz' right-hand rule. Using the built-in electrode attachment panel, you apply a low voltage to the apparatus and gradually increase the voltage. This causes current to flow through an electrolytic solution in the trough (sodium hydroxide 5-10%) providing the moving charged particles. When small magnets are placed on the electrode attachment panel and under the trough itself, the force on the charged particles cause the solution to flow. Because the trough and its base are made of clear acrylic, you can mount the apparatus on an overhead projector. Includes trough and base; two pairs of electrodes for applying voltage (one pair can be kept as a spare); four ferrite magnets with indicated polarities; two floating acrylic disks that you place in the trough to indicate the direction of flow and instructions.
